Fears & Phobias with Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy at 1066 Hypnotherapy
The difference between a fear and a phobia is usually measured by the intensity of the feelings you have for a given situation - for example, a powerful dislike of heights, say, where you perhaps feel unsafe but you are able to control your anxiety reasonably well can be regarded as a fear whereas if you tend to 'freeze' or have uncontrollable anxiety or start to have panic attacks in an otherwise safe situation involving heights (perhaps being inside the top of a tall building) then you can be considered as suffering from a phobia. A phobia may be specific where the fear is related to one object or situation, such as arachnophobia (fear of spiders) or aerophobia (fear of flying) or emetophobia (fear of vomiting); or a phobia may be more generalised and relate to a range of situations, such as claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or sociophobia (which is broadly a fear of being judged). The top ten fears/phobias are as follows:
Over time, your fear or your phobia may develop to the point where it can have a significant impact on your life. It would be quite common for you to gradually limit your lifestyle to try as much as possible to avoid potential situations which may trigger your fear or phobia. In extreme cases this can lead to a sufferer of agoraphobia, for example, never being able to leave the house. Some therapies, including Suggestion Therapy, CBT, NLP, EFT (tapping), can offer you some relief by aiming for "symptom control". This is usually achieved by the input of positive suggestions or by re-conditioning your reactions and teaching you coping mechanisms: a good example of this are the courses people can take to overcome their fear of flying. However, as the underlying bottled up emotions causing the fear or phobia is not resolved by using any of these methods, even if you are successful with controlling your particular fear, the 'success' will either be temporary and your original fear or phobia will return after a short time OR you will develop another fear or phobia or anxiety-related problem, usually within a matter of weeks (known as 'symptom substitution'). So, for example, a person who suffers from claustrophobia and as a result avoids getting into lifts or other enclosed spaces, could have their claustrophobia effectively controlled by using Suggestion Therapy, CBT, NLP, EFT or whatever only to find that, within a few weeks, they have developed agoraphobia, say, and find it difficult to leave the house! This is called "symptom substitution" and it is common for your new fear, phobia or problem to have a more debilitating affect on you than your original fear, phobia or symptom.
