Anxiety is often described as "fear spread thinly" which is probably as close as you can get to actually putting the sensation into words. Often, if you are feeling anxious, you also have the feeling that you just can't quite 'put your finger on' what the cause of your anxiety is. In some cases, anxiety can develop into an anxiety attack or panic attack which is very disturbing as it appears to come ‘out of the blue’ and has, to your own conscious awareness, no discernible cause. Your heart beats fast, your rate of breathing increases and you find it difficult to breathe in enough air, you sweat, you feel rooted to the spot and it is very common for people in these situations to think they are having a heart attack, so all in all this is very distressing. Anxiety is also known as irrational fear and the most recognised forms of irrational fear are the many phobias. Phobias are symbolic representations of internal anxiety which your subconscious projects outwards onto an object or situation. A phobia may be specific where the fear is related to one specific object or situation, such as arachnophobia (fear of spiders) or emetophobia (fear of vomiting); or a phobia may be more generalised and relate to a range of situations, such as claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) or agoraphobia (fear of open spaces). Over time, your anxiety or your phobia may develop to the point where it can have a significant impact on your life. It is quite common to gradually limit your lifestyle so as to always be able to avoid potential situations which may trigger your anxiety or phobia or another panic attack. In extreme cases this can lead to a sufferer of agoraphobia, for example, never being able to leave the house. Some therapies, including Suggestion Therapy, can offer you some relief by aiming for 'symptom control'. This is usually achieved by the input of positive suggestions and/or re-conditioning your reactions and teaching you coping mechanisms: a good example of this are the courses people can take to overcome their fear of flying. However, as the underlying subconscious cause of the anxiety, fear or phobia is not resolved by using these methods, the impulse still being created by it will manifest itself in another form, usually within a matter of weeks. So, for example, a person who suffers from claustrophobia and so avoids getting into lifts or other enclosed spaces, could have their phobia effectively controlled by using Suggestion Therapy, CBT, NLP or whatever only to find that, within a few weeks, they have developed agoraphobia and find it difficult to leave the house! This is called "symptom substitution" and it is quite common for the new substitute phobia or symptom to have a more debilitating affect on you than the original phobia or symptom had.
