I have helped a variety of people with these sorts of problems using either psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, or cognitive therapy.
All of us have experienced some sort of pain or discomfort at one time or another, usually from illness or injury, but thankfully this is usually short-lived and is relieved once we have received any treatment (if necessary) and healed ourselves.
However, there are increasing numbers of people suffering from chronic/persistent pain or repeated bouts of acute pain, most commonly in the lower back, neck, shoulders or buttock area and sometimes the pain is accompanied by sciatica or similar problems in the arms or legs. Then there are those with persistent joint or muscle pains; and there are also many people suffering the pain of occasional or frequent, migraines or tension headaches.
A lot of people I see with pain problems have tried all manner of treatments to obtain some relief from their problem(s). However nothing much has worked. So they may live in some level of constant pain or discomfort. Or they may live in fear of when their next pain episode will be. Often, they will tend to limit their life and lifestyle as far as possible to avoid that happening.
Professor Sarno & TMS
John E Sarno M.D. is a professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the New York University School of Medicine. Over the past 35 years, Dr Sarno and his team of associates, have treated thousands of people suffering from chronic or recurring acute pain problems, with amazing results.
Dr Sarno has called the pain disorder which they had “Tension Myositis Syndrome” or “TMS” for short. TMS is a very painful yet essentially harmless change to either the muscles, nerves, tendons or ligaments (or a combination of them). The muscles involved are usually the postural muscles in the back of the neck, the entire back and the buttocks. However, TMS can affect nerves, tendons, ligaments and muscles anywhere in the body. These are usually in the limbs, often in the joint areas. Dr Sarno has found that these pains are often caused by unresolved emotional conflicts, stress and the like as opposed to there being actual serious physical ‘malfunctions’: in other words, the pain is very real, sometimes quite disabling, but there is no actual injury.
Pain & Stress
Another thing we know (from studies and research) is that any stress, tension, anxiety or worry makes any discomfort feel much worse. In particular, it’s widely believed that inner tension, anxiety or stress cause or worsen migraines and tension headaches (as the name suggests!). If this underlying stress or anxiety has been gradually building over a long period, it makes everything worse. This happens for many people.
This is where I can help using therapy. Therapy can be very effective at helping to significantly reduce accumulated stress, anxiety and inner tension levels.
Psychotherapy is also very useful in helping people to resolve underlying emotional conflicts. As a result, reducing stress/anxiety levels. The best way forward for any individual is discussed during a free 30 minute initial consultation.
As I am not a medical doctor I am unable to actually diagnose TMS. Also, this page is for information purposes only. The information is NOT a diagnosis or treatment of any pain. Also, the information is NOT a substitute for proper medical advice. It is essential therefore that you have your pain syndrome/problem properly medically investigated. This is to rule out the possibility that a serious underlying disorder is causing the pain. For this reason, everyone who consults me for help with a pain problem must have a referral from their doctor.
