What
is Hypnosis?
For
a lot of people, hypnosis is associated with stage shows where volunteers
have apparently been put into a deep trance, have lost control of
their minds and are somehow 'made' to do weird and wacky things to
make a spectacle of themselves. However, this has nothing to do with
being 'under hypnosis' - it's rather to do with the volunteers knowing
exactly what they were letting themselves in for and knowing exactly
what they are doing and going along with it in order to put on a good
show. That's Entertainment!
There
is actually nothing magical or mystical about the state of hypnosis
- it is a completely natural phenomenon that you can experience every
day.
For example: have you ever experienced driving along for several miles
(usually on a familiar route) and suddenly realising that you have
little idea of how you got to where you find yourself? Well, you had
been driving in a hypnotic state, on auto-pilot if you will. Fortunately,
your subconscious was alert to any possible danger during this time
and would have jolted you back out of your hypnotic state in an instant
if necessary. Similarly, how often have you been so absorbed in reading
a book or watching a film and hadn’t realised that someone was
talking to you? Again, you have experienced a waking hypnosis. Finally,
there is also that time at bedtime and waking up when you are halfway
between sleep and being awake – you know that you are not awake
and neither are you asleep and this is also hypnosis.

Hypnosis
for therapeutic reasons has been in use for hundreds of years and
is all about relaxation. You will not be asleep, out of control or
unaware of what is happening at any time. You can easily converse
within the hypnotic state and remember everything that you say or
that is said to you.
The
state of hypnosis is best described as "A state of relaxation
and concentration at one with a state of heightened awareness induced
by suggestion" and, although there is no such thing as a ‘hypnotised
feeling’ the results of the various therapies generally speak
for themselves.
I offer
two different types of therapy, both using hypnosis: Suggestion
Therapy (sometimes called clinical hypnosis) and 'Pure'
Hypnoanalysis. The choice of therapy depends on the individual,
their goals, their problems or symptoms and their general personality.
During an initial consultation I will explain both types of therapies
and answer any questions you may have before deciding which is the
most appropriate therapy for your situation.
