It is quite normal to feel a little lacking in confidence in a new social or work situation. Or perhaps when facing a challenge. However, if we have confidence problems generally, we will feel more than a little lacking confidence in such situations. We will also have uncomfortable thoughts and feelings about ourselves and our abilities even in ordinary, everyday situations.
Confidence problems can hold us back in life. They can prevent us from trying many things which could enhance our life. Things such as trying out new hobbies, going for promotion at work, asking for a well-deserved pay rise, going out on a date etc. These problems often link to a fear of failure, or making mistakes. They may also connect with a fear of being judged, criticised or rejected.
Low self-esteem and poor self-image
Confidence problems often go hand-in-hand with low self-esteem and/ or a poor self-image.
On the face of it, confidence problems, low self-esteem, and poor self-image may sound like the same thing but, although they often ‘overlap’, there are differences between them:
- Confidence problems usually mean we have little belief in our abilities. We feel like we will not succeed, so we may not even try.
- Low self-esteem is when we feel pretty worthless generally as an individual.
- Poor self-image is when we believe that we are unattractive or ugly. We may then skip on self-care. Perhaps leaving our hair unwashed or unkempt, or not washing much generally. Sometimes we may keep ourselves too thin or fat etc.
Causes of confidence problems
Ideally, if we want to sort out our confidence problems and lack of self-belief for good, we will need to look at resolving the causes. The causes are usually underlying, unresolved feelings from negative past experiences. These are usually from early life and often long-forgotten by the time we develop confidence problems.
The causes are often stored subconsciously (i.e. outside of conscious awareness) which makes it more difficult in many ways for us. However, it is possible to resolve even subconscious causes by using appropriate therapy.
There are many ‘tools’ and approaches available to help us to manage these problems, including self-help CDs, NLP, CBT, EFT, suggestion therapy, and counselling to name a few. Some of these may be of some help, although often they are only temporarily effective.
I offer different approaches for this (and every problem) and the choice of which one (or more) to take depends on the individual and their circumstances. We usually make the decision together during the initial consultation.
