Most
people who consult me with a problem involving weight loss or weight
control or dieting - which they have due to comfort eating, over-eating
or binge eating - think that the problem they have
is just with certain foods, so..... However, I am frequently consulted by people who have actually managed to achieve their ideal weight in the past, perhaps on more than one occasion, yet this has still not been enough for them to be truly happy and comfortable about themselves so it's only been a matter of time before the comfort eating or over-eating or binge eating has piled the pounds back on again (yo-yo dieting). So, why does this happen time and again? And why don't diets, any diet, actually work? More later... I am also consulted on a regular basis by people who are actually of a normal or near normal weight for their height and build and yet they still have a near constant struggle with thoughts of food and their weight. These people tend to comfort eat or go on a binge as and when they feel the need to but they then undertake vigorous exercise programmes in order to keep their weight under control. However, the crux of the matter is that their lives are still being controlled by their particular problem with food intake/weight control and why is that? In actual fact, whichever pattern you fall into, you need to look at what is going on 'behind' the problems you have with food and your weight, as food is NOT your problem. You need to look at your feelings and the thoughts you have about yourself which make you want to comfort yourself by eating: after all, it's not called "comfort eating" for nothing - there has to be some, often deep, discomfort present for comfort eating to be needed. Perhaps you feel anxious or lack confidence or worry about what other people think of you a lot or have low self-esteem or you're regularly stressed for instance and eating simply makes you feel better. Now, this may 'fly in the face' of everything you may know or have been told about food and dieting problems in the past but just think about it for a couple of minutes, be honest with yourself and consider if one or two of those things apply to you before you dismiss it completely and then read on if it's starting to make sense to you. As I have mentioned, food (or certain foods) or a lack of willpower are essentially not your problem - comfort eating, over-eating, or binge eating are all 'coping mechanisms' which you feel 'compelled' to do to make yourself feel better about yourself; to comfort yourself. Underlying all of this are the uncomfortable and unwanted thoughts and feelings that you have about yourself and which have usually been bottled up over a long time and it is these bottled up feelings that you need to resolve in order to be able to control your food intake, achieve your ideal weight and maintainl it permanently. For example, like a lot of the people I see for weight
control problems, you might not have much self-confidence. Now, a
lot of people think that their lack of confidence
is solely due to them being overweight but that's not
the real reason - if it was, as I said before, I would never see the
many, many clients who have previously achieved their ideal weight
only to return to comfort eating or over-eating or binge eating and
put the weight back on - the lack of confidence (in this example)
always comes first. The only way to permanently resolve your problems with food and your weight, whatever they may be, is to resolve the bottled up feelings which compel you to over-eat or comfort eat in the first place. A course of 'Pure' Hypnoanalysis can do this for you.
