However, for some people excessive or abnormal blushing or sweating is a serious problem occurring on a daily basis and it can have a serious impact on the quality of their lives. If you are reading this page I assume that either or both problems apply to you. You will find, I am sure, that your blushing or sweating comes on in situations which should otherwise be of minimal actual embarrassment or stress to you - such as meeting a friend by chance while out shopping or being in a meeting at work and simply being asked for your opinion on something. Indeed the fear of blushing, known as erythrophobia, or the problem of excessive sweating, known as hyperhidrosis, can make you feel like you have to limit or try to control your lifestyle in order to avoid as much as possible any situation where either might occur. Blushing isn't always confined to the face or cheeks, sometimes the redness may extend all down the neck and upper chest and can take on a blotchy appearance which makes women especially feel conscious of it as they might feel unable to wear certain styles of clothes. Excessive sweating can occur most anywhere on the body but is mostly on the face, armpits, chest, palms of the hands or soles of the feet - between 1 and 3% of the population actually suffers from hyperhidrosis as opposed to having a general problem with sweating. Abnormal blushing and sweating aren't for the majority of sufferers actually physical problems - they are in fact symptoms of social anxiety or social phobia which is essentially a fear of being judged in a negative way and I expect you spend a lot of time worrying about what others are thinking of you, even when you're not blushing or sweating. Unfortunately, this only serves to make matters worse as the more anxious you feel, the more you blush and sweat. Think about it - if you didn't worry about being judged in a negative way by those around you, you wouldn't worry so much about whether you were blushing and sweating in the first place and so there would be little or no problem! It's a vicious circle. Social anxiety is caused by subconscious, bottled up emotions and it is these factors which are the cause of all of your problems. There are some medical ways of controlling the symptoms, such as taking tablets like "Eredicane" for blushing or beta-blockers for sweating; or having botox injections; or having surgery. The surgical operation is known as 'sympathectomy' and involves destroying the sympathetic nerves serving the areas involved with blushing or sweating. This operation is not often available on the NHS and privately it will cost you about £4,000. However, I must stress that, if you choose to try Eredicane or botox or surgery, this is only dealing with your particular symptom, it is not dealing with the root cause. So, even IF you do manage to control your symptom in one of these ways, the underlying bottled up emotions causing it will still be present and they will go on to produce another symptom for you, perhaps anxiety or panic attacks or maybe claustrophobia or something else: this is known as 'symptom substitution'. The only way to properly resolve your problem and to make sure you do not develop a different symptom or problem in the future is to resolve the underlying cause of your blushing, sweating and social anxiety.
